Hint 2433: Warning -- certain antiques, such as pendulum clocks and barometers, contain potentially hazardous amounts of mercury.

Exposure to this toxic metal can harm the brain, nervous system and kidneys, and is especially hazardous to developing fetuses and young children.

Mercury is liquid at room temperature, but if it spills, it vaporizes and can be inhaled. It was once widely used in pendulum clocks, thermometers and barometers, and in some cases to add weight to the base of lamps. Because of its reflectivity, mercury was also sometimes used to construct mirrors in the 16th through 19th centuries.

Here are some tips:

  • ~ Never buy an antique known to contain mercury, or any item that a seller cannot verify is mercury-free.
  • ~ If you have a mercury-containing antique, do not attempt to remove the metal. If a spill occurs, contact local or state health department or environmental agency.
  • ~ Know which antiques are most likely to contain mercury: thermometers, thermostats and barometers; silvered mirrors and vases; pendulum clocks; electrical switches; and blood pressure gauges.
